"Anxiety"

Story image

I decided to paint this piece as a way to give shape to something that feels overwhelming and invisible. I painted the eyes in a way that represents the sense of always being watched, judged and unable to escape from one’s thought. My use of harsh red and dark textures symbolises emotions such as anger, panic, fear, uncertainty, and it implies someone’s mind being constantly on the edge, unable to fight this external pressure. I painted this because anxiety is misunderstood and sometimes words aren’t enough to describe it – instead my painting approaches the feeling of being seen and acknowledged. It portrays how anxiety makes a person feel exposed even when alone. It means tension and restlessness. It’s a proof of presence that sense “I’m here.” The painting is not meant to be comfortable or pretty but real because anxiety is real. I painted a piece that cannot be put into words, but felt. It presents how small people suffering from anxiety feel around others, how different we can be, and that’s okay. Suspended between her mind and the world outside it. Not because she’s fearless, but because she refuses to disappear. My painting is meant to capture that fragile persistence. It shows that a person who is overwhelmed can yet still be present, distorted yet still reaching for clarity.
